KEY FINDINGS

AUSTRALIA'S CARBON SINK POTENTIAL           WHEAT  Australia’s 445 million hectares of agricultural land, has a carbon-sink potential to sequestrate over 1,300 million tonnes of CO2‑e emissions each year for at least 40 years.  This is double the yearly total of Australian greenhouse gas emissions.

WORLD EMISSIONS REDUCED BY 50%           IRRIGATION  The world has 5,000 million hectares of agricultural land. If bio-agricultural practices are used on this farmland, the world’s total greenhouse gas emissions can be reduced by up to 50%. This farmland has a carbon-sink potential for at least 40 years.

 SAMPLE SCENARIOS

These scenarios illustrate the major role bio-agriculture can play in the fight against climate change

Both scenarios demonstrate the positive outcomes that would occur if government emission reduction offers were supported by a gradual implementation of bio-agricultural farming.

                          World Scenario

 THE WORLD WILL:

• Achieve a maximum temperature increase of 2 deg C.
• Achieve a 25% reduction in CO2-e emissions by 2020.
• Achieve a 76% reduction in CO2-e emissions by 2050.
• Generate Net Benefits of $2,645 billion* over 10 years.
• Increase food and water availability, reducing world hunger.
• Reclaim 252 million hectares of lost and degraded agricultural land.

                     Australian Scenario

AUSTRALIA WILL:

• Be Carbon Neutral by 2025.
• Achieve a 71% reduction in CO2-e emissions by 2020.
• Achieve an 75% reduction in CO2-e emissions by 2021.
• Generate Net Benefits of $349 billion* over 10 years.
• Reclaim 23 million hectares of lost and degraded agricultural land.

*All amounts in $US.

Another Austrialian scenario illustrating the great emission reduction potential of countries with extensive agricultural land can be seen here.

You can explore scenarios for most countries of the World by using the Climate Change Calculator and see for yourself the effect of bio-agriculture on climate change, land degradation and food and water availability.

Scenarios are based on:

  • The world achieving a maximum temperature increase of 2 degrees C (IPCC Category 1)
  • Governments of the world implemeningt a 10% reduction of CO2-e by 2020 (reduced from 2000 levels).
  • 2.5% of agricultural land converted to bio-agriculture each year, reducing emissions by 3 tonnes of CO2-e/hectare/year.
  • Costs and benefits are based on treasury calculations.
  • Data used is taken from long term scientific research as well as statistical data from The World Bank, UNEP, FAO, US Census figures and Australian Government Treasury figures,       MORE
